Mário M. Freire is a full professor of Computer Science at University of Beira Interior (UBI), Covilhã, Portugal, which he joined in the Fall of 1994, and a Researcher of the MSP - Covilhã Group at Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), where he maintains an active and well-funded research program in the broad fields of computer systems and networking.

Dr. Mário Freire completed high school at Escola Secundária José Falcão in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1987, received the five-year Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1992 and the two-year Master of Science degree in Systems and Automation in 1994, both from the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in continuous operation, established in 1290. He received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering from UBI in 2000 and the Habilitation title in Computer Science from UBI in 2007. When he was a MS student at University of Coimbra, he was also a trainee researcher for a short period in the Spring of 1993 at the Research Centre of Alcatel-SEL (now Alcatel-Lucent) in Stuttgart, Germany.

Presently, Dr. Mário Freire is the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of UBI, having been reelected for a second four-year term (term 2013-2017). Previously, he also served for the four-year term 2009-2013 as Director of the Center for Computer Science at UBI, which provides computer, networking and software services to all Faculties and Services of the University. He was also the Chair of the Department of Computer Science at UBI for the two-year terms 2004-2006 and 2006-2009.

He teaches courses on Communication Protocols at the MS program in Computer Science and Engineering and teaches courses on Advanced Topics in Computer Science and Engineering, Advanced Topics in Peer-to-Peer Networks and Topics in Architectures for Cloud Computing at the PhD Program in Computer Science and Engineering at UBI.

Dr. Mario Freire is a chartered engineer by the Portuguese Order of Engineers – Computer Science and Engineering College and he is a member of the IEEE Computer Society and the IEEE Communications Society, a member of the Association for Computing Machinery. He was the Coordinator of the Computer Science and Engineering Chapter of the Portuguese Order of Engineers – Center Region for the three-year terms 2007/2010 and 2010/2013 and was a member of the National Council of this chapter for the three-year term 2004-2007. He was also the Chair of IEEE Computer Society Chapter - Portugal Section for the term 2005-2009.
